Event changes

Firstly, thanks to all that came out to Slow Six - much greater a success than I had imagined, definitely made all the trouble we went through to get the show locked in worth it

Secondly, this Friday is the LAST OPEN MIC of the semester. 8pm, free, the basement. Last chance until late August..

Thirdly, the Senior Show has been moved BACK to this Saturday, 4/19. We moved it a week ahead due to conflicts, but that made more conflicts, so we're back to this weekend. Free, 8pm, come see all your graduating friends play their music!

Fourthly, the Spring Art Show is upon us, and has been moved up a week to make it eligible for the EMAC students who need to display their work in public to graduate. It will now be held on 4/26. As always, 8pm, free. Email the activities manager (booking@gzbasement.net or xus3@rpi.edu) if you'd like to have something shown.

Slow Six on Saturday!

If you only knew what we went through to lock in this show... It's worth it though, all of these bands are mind-blowing. Seriously, ask anyone who came to see Slow Six last semester - they're almost TOO good.

Tell your friends!

======= Saturday, April 12th @ 8pm ========

:: Slow Six ---> Beautiful post-rock/neo-classical
:::: Charlie Everywhere ---> Electronic indie duo
:::::: The Red Lions ---> Classy indie/jazz/folk
:::::::: On a Scale of 1 to 10 ---> Epic post-rock

8pm | $5.00

============= Band Descriptions ==============

[Slow Six]
Website: http://www.myspace.com/slowsix // http://www.slowsix.com
Slow Six are a Brooklyn outfit led by Christopher Tignor, who experiment with live sampling and digital signal processing to create brooding and beautiful ambient music somewhere between post rock and neo-classical. One really can't put into words how amazing this band is. For fans of Godspeed! You Black Emperor, Kronos Quartet, etc.

[Charlie Everywhere]
Website: http://www.myspace.com/charlieeverywhere2
Self-described as "a culmination of unique urban influenced rhythms, and psychedelic melodies, with combined technology and organic textures," Charlie Everywhere present their unique take on electro-indie pop with female vocals. By blending hip hop influenced samples and beats with the synths and melodies of your favorite indie band, Charlie Everywhere's resulting sound offers something for everyone.

[The Red Lions]
Website: http://www.myspace.com/theredlions
Project mastermind Eric Margan calls the Red Lions "a fine mixture of popular song, classical virtue, jazz chops, folk storytelling and timeless lyrics. Music which draws upon countless influences, borrowing and blending elements resulting in an original sound to which most listeners reply with an affecting familiarity." I'd elaborate, but I don't think I could make it any more accurate. I hear a variety of bands in their sound, ranging from Nick Cave to the Beatles, but I'm sure you'll hear an even wider selection of influences. This is classy.

[On a Scale of 1 to 10]
Website: http://www.myspace.com/onascaleof1to10
Epic post-rock in the vein of Explosions in the Sky. From soft, ambient melodies to driving crescendos, On a Scale of 1 to 10 play instrumental pieces fitting to be heard in the Lord of the Rings soundtrack. Except less nerdy.

This weekend - Open Mic!

Hope everyone who came out to the TNO afterparty last weekend had a fun time... we sure did. Thanks to Ryan for hooking Dostoevsky's Pistols up with a chance to play again, and to Joro Boro for being awesome.

This weekend, we've got another of GZ's always entertaining, biweekly OPEN MICS. You know the drill - 8pm, free, come hang out, play some songs, read a story, tell some jokes, juggle bowling trophies, etc... We've only got a couple more left before the semester comes to a close!

In the near future, we have the epic return of SLOW SIX, as well as the annual SENIOR SHOW and the SPRING ART SHOW - be on the lookout.

Interested in living at GZ next year? We've still got a couple slots open on the first floor of Nugent Hall, so if you're going to be an upperclassman at RPI (sophomore to senior), shoot an email to president@rpi.edu with the title "Interested in living at GZ." In few other places can you live with fun, sociable people with similar interests, so if you think GZ is for you, take advantage of it while you can!

NEW WEBSITE!

GZ OPEN MIC
Friday, March 21st
8pm | FREE!

The open mic will ALSO be serving as the official launch party for our newly revamped website!

Harry Pyle
+ Apple Jackzzzzz
++ Abstract Artimus
+++ Johnny Jitters
Saturday, March 22nd
8PM | $3

[Harry Pyle]
Website: http://www.myspace.com/harrypyle
Harry Pyle is going to bring a dance party more powerful than mecha-godzilla stapled to mothra. Accordian, guitar, vocals, laptop and LOTS OF ROCKING. Harry Pyle's unique style of 1980s-esque dance-rock is so infectious, that it'll get even the squarest loser shakin' it.

[Apple Jackzzzzz]
Website: http://www.myspace.com/tasteslikeapplez
The newest musical project from GZ president and RPI alum Zane Van Dusen. After a summer of dealing with adult issues (tax laws, liquidity and water coolers), Zane decided to get in touch with his inner child. The result is a set of infectious high-energy indie-synth-pop songs about cooties, staying up late, hating vegetables and resenting parental authority.

[Abstract Artimus]
Website: http://www.myspace.com/abstractartimus
Side project of Lidia Stone drummer, Abstract Artimus drops hot beats and fabulous rhymes, all in a fun, abrasive electro-punk package sure to make you wanna move your body in ways your parents would never approve.

[Johnny Jitters]
Website: http://www.myspace.com/johnnyjitters
Johnny Jitters is going to warm up the stage with some experimental electronica, producing what some might consider IDM. Whatever you want to call it (I can never keep up with all the electronic genres, you guys are nuts), it's totally rad.

LEAP YR

+ FRIDAY, FEB 29 -- OPEN MIC NIGHT +

This FRIDAY, SUPER RARE LEAP YEAR OPEN MIC! It's not often you see an open mic on a day that only happens once every 4 years, folks. In fact, this might be the first GZ Leap Year Open Mic, ever! Don't miss this piece of [insignificant] history! As always, free to everyone, starting at 8pm in the basement.

+ SATURDAY, MAR 1 +

SGT. DUNBAR AND THE HOBO BANNED
+ SEVERE SEVERE
++ Dostoevsky's Pistols
+++ Mamoona

SGT. DUNBAR AND THE HOBO BANNED [ folk/indie ]
for fans of: Neutral Milk Hotel, the Microphones
"The Hobo Banned's psych-folk songs don't hearken back to the past as much as they yearn for the future." -Metroland Best of 2007

"[Sgt Dunbar's songs are] catchy, wide-eyed, loose and delightfully shambolic postmodern folk with horns." -Philip Schwartz, Schenectady Gazette

"No matter who you hear in their sound or compare them to, there is loads here to love." -My Old Kentucky Blog

SEVERE SEVERE [ indie/experimental/rock ]
for fans of: Joy Division, Sonic Youth
"Severe Severe employs rhythms that sometimes require acclimation by the listener, but they reward the effort with a surprising consistency and quality over the length of a song that has matured into a particularly good live set. Among the songs to be featured on their new album, "Awakening Fire" displays some of the characteristic traits of their sound - tight, driving drumming, relentless movement in the guitar and bass punctuated by short bursts of emotional/electrical release, and the kind of economy of sound and wiry presentation that has its roots in the better post-punk bands of the early 80s."

DOSTOEVSKY'S PISTOLS [ gypsy-punk/folk ]
for fans of: Gogol Bordello, World/Inferno Friendship Society
"Now running steadily at over 10 [nearing 20...] members, Dostoevsky's Pistols, led by Kyle McDonald, are an answer to the rise in 'gypsy-punk' bands, as coined by Gogol Bordello's Eugene Hutz. The Pistols further experiment with this blending of genres, splicing eastern european culture and music with punk, post rock, and dance music, resulting in a fresh, upbeat, totally fun experience. Featuring Peter Paggi on accordion, there really is no reason NOT to love this band."

MAMOONA [ indie pop ]
for fans of: Neutral Milk Hotel, Page France
Named for the monster that once hid in Tony's grandfather's attic, Mamoona blend folk chords and simple drums with reverb-drenched guitars and playful basslines, resulting in an eerily catchy brand of indie pop sure to leave the listener impressed.

NEW WEBSITE COMING SOON!!

THIS SATURDAY, FEB 23... GZ cordially invites you to:

CAPILLARY ACTION
+ PWRFL POWER
++ AFICIONADO

Admission: $3

CAPILLARY ACTION [ experimental/avant-rock/jazz ]
"[Capillary Action] demonstrates an uncanny ability
to dip into everything from melodic death metal rave-ups, fractured no
wave-inspired crescendos, Latin rhythms, video game music, lazy
alt-country pop, lounge jazz, new wave synths, and mathy melodies--
sometimes all within the same song."

" Capillary Action sounds like the product of a restless but focused
mind. Ethereal, pleasant passages narrow into trance-inducing loops
before opening up into sonic squalls. The music pulls you in, lulls you
into a false sense of security, then smashes you over the head. In a
good way."
- Alan Paul, Guitar World

PWRFL POWER [ indie/folk/pop ]
PWRFL Power covers considerable aesthetic strides--from contemplative
sparsity to bluesy dexterity to pure pop, and on through to a number
scarcely definable alleyways in between--whilst spinning loving yarns
about self-acceptance, internet dating, chopstick etiquette, loathsome
cats, cocaine, obsessive-compulsive text messaging, and tomato throwing.
And what's most awe-inspiring is that, in spite of this innate humor,
PWRFL Power manages to transcend the potentially cloying confines of its
subject matter--seemingly by sheer will--with thoughtfully constructed,
elegantly played, and catchy as fuck compositions. So yes, the songs are
meant to be funny. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't take them seriously.

AFICIONADO [ prog/rock ]
These Albany natives play proggy rock in the vein of the Mars Volta.
Throw Yes, Kansas, Rush, Led Zeppelin, Refused, Converge, Every Time
I Die, King Crimson, Queen, The Mars Volta, At the Drive In, Muse, and
Radiohead into a blender, and it might end up sounding like Aficionado.
